October is the month of spooks and specters, ghouls and goblins, as well as candy and costumes. I always enjoy throwing some lines onto paper for that most chilling of holidays - Halloween!

There is currently a zombie hoard crawling over the tips of my oil pastels, and you can expect even more thrilling art in the coming weeks!

This Is Halloween!

Halloween is my favorite holiday of the year! It's the one time of year when you can dress up and pretend to be whoever you want to be... pirate, ninja, wizard or knight!

In 2008, Heather and I dressed as a pirate and his wench. Last year, we were the Big Bad Wolf and Little Red Riding Hood. This year, Heather was Medusa and I was a Spartan soldier, turned to stone.

The costumes took a lot of time, but we had fun with them. My armor was made from cardboard and poster board, and Heather made my helmet from a milk jug, cardboard and duct tape. The whole thing was spray-painted with "stone look" paint. I'm pretty pleased with it. Heather spent hours braiding green yarn from her vast knitting stash into dreads, which of course are representative of snakes. We made a few strands of Sculpey beads and snake heads to finish off the look.

"Frankenstein Reigns" Original Art Drawing

"Frankenstein Reigns" portrays the classic mega movie monster that Dr. Frankenstein created in his laboratory. He runs terrified through the raging lightning storm, unable to come to grips with the atrocities he has committed.

Pencil and oil pastels were used to create this original artwork. The artwork has been etched to give it a great realistic texture. This piece is 6 x 6 inches (15.3 x 15.3 cm) and it is available for sale in my Etsy store.

It's a marvelous night for a moon dance...

The four of us watched "Return to Oz" tonight. Heather and the girls have seen it many times, but somehow this movie has escaped my knowledge until now. I thoroughly enjoyed it and felt inspired. I started drawing about 3/4 of the way through and came up with my version of "Jack Pumpkinhead".

"Moondance" portrays a happy Jack Pumpkin scarecrow, dancing through a cornfield by the light of the harvest moon. A single crow picks at the Indian corn fallen from the nearby cornstalk.

Pencil, ink, watercolor pencil and pastel were used to create this original artwork. This piece is 6 x 6 inches (15.3 x 15.3 cm).
